AP Courses

Participating in Advanced Placement classes helps students to pursue college-level studies while still in high school. AP classes provide students with the opportunity to earn college credit and/or advanced placement. Taking AP courses also demonstrates to college admissions offer that student’s have sought out a rigorous curriculum. Each AP course is modeled upon a comparable college course and concludes with a college level exam developed and scored by college and university faculty members as well as experienced AP teachers.

Each AP course available at SEP has been audited and approved by the by the College Board and each of our AP teaches has received appropriate training from the College Board. St. Edmund Prep AP teachers attend workshops regularly to ensure that they are up to date with the latest information concerning their class.

Performing well on an AP exams means more than just the successful completion of the course. It also gives students the necessary tools to succeed in college. Students who score a 3 or higher (maximum score is a 5) may often receive college credit and typically experience greater academic success than the non AP student

The cost of taking an Advanced Placement class is only the cost of the test, which for the 2010-2011 school year is $87.

Current AP Class Offereings and Prerequisites

AP classes are offered to juniors and seniors with the exception of two classes. AP European History is only offered to sophomores and AP English is only offered to seniors. Below you will find the AP classes that we are currently offering along with the prerequisites students must achieve before receiving approval to take the course.

AP Computer Science A	Successful completion of required math, advanced computer science, departmental approval
AP English	Senior with an 80% average or greater in all previous English courses
AP Studio Art	College Art
AP Italian	Senior with an 80% average or greater in Italian, departmental approval
AP Spanish	Senior with an 80% average or greater in Spanish, departmental approval
AP Calculus AB	Minimum average of 85% in math 3 honors or pre-calculus, passing regent grade on alg2/trig regent, departmental approval
AP Biology	Passing grades on biology and chemistry regent, average of a 90% or better in previous science courses
AP Chemistry	Chemistry regent score of 80% or greater, chemistry class average of 90% or higher, completion of a second year of math with an average of 90% or above
AP European History	Sophomore with a GPA of 90% or above, document analysis, writing sample
AP American History	90% average or higher in American History and/or World Civilizations
AP US Government and Politics	90% average or higher in American History and/or World Civilizations
AP Psychology	Cumulative GPA of 85%
