FRENCH 1

This course will introduce and develop the listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills on a basic level. The first year French student is expected to acquire the ability to speak briefly in French on every day subjects, to understand simple French statements, and to read and write in French the topics he/she has learned.
FRENCH 2

This course is a continuation from French 1. Speaking, listening, reading, and writing will be developed further. This course will emphasize the grammatical aspects of the language. Special emphasis will be placed on the ability to write dialogues and guided compositions and answer questions in French on topics studied in French 1 and French 2.
FRENCH 3 REGENTS

This course will reinforce the four skills established in French 1 and French 2. This year the four skills will be further developed. The readings will include material from magazines, newspapers and literature. The writing assignments will increase in scope and speaking French as a means for communication in class will be encouraged.
FRENCH FOR CAREERS

This course will offer an opportunity for learning various terms applicable to the changing occupations in today’s society, such as sports, medicine, science, law, education, advertising, business, federal and civic service, etc. Students who successfully complete level 2 can take this course in conjunction with level 3. Teacher’s approval required.
ADVANCED PLACEMENT FRENCH 4

This course in French will emphasize French literature and language. Students may take the Advanced Placement test at the end of the course in order to receive college credit. Prerequisite: completion of French 3 with an average of 85 or better and passing the Comprehensive Regent examination in French.
ITALIAN 1

At this level students review important concepts of Italian grammar and focus attention on the subtleties of the Italian language. Oral practice in conversation and discussion of reading selections is provided. Through the various reading selections of Italian literature, the students are given the opportunity to appreciate contemporary writing and a variety of literary genres. Upon successful completion of the course, students will receive 6 credits from St. John’s University. Requirements: School Average 85 - Minimum grade on Italian 3 Regents 85 - Additional fee required.
SPANISH 1

LATIN 1

This course will lay the foundation for the study of the romance languages. It will be an aid to the study of English grammar.
LATIN 2

The study of Latin will be further developed. The student will be intro-duced to the use of the subjunctive mode. The student will begin to read and interpret certain passages from the Gallic Wars of Caesar.
TRAVEL STUDY PROGRAMS
5554 .5 credit
A course of approximately 15 days, usually taking place during the Easter recess. The trip may cover two or more countries, but the longer stay will be in the country of the target language. Credit is earned upon completion of a project initiated in class before the trip.
