Fine Arts Scholarships
About The Scholarships
In Addition to the academic scholarships, St. Edmund Prep also offers four partial scholarships ($500 per year) for excellence in the fine arts. Two incoming freshmen will be awarded scholarships for music and one incoming freshman will be awarded a scholarship for art. A second art scholarship will be awarded to a sophomore student who has already completed the freshman art course at St. Edmund Prep and has displayed outstanding work.
Art Scholarships
For the Art Scholarships, please contact the school no later than February 26, 2008.
A test of drawing ability, ruler skills and a knowledge of art history will be given to all applicants. The test will be given on Saturday, March 1 at 10 AM. To register, call Mr. Ray Malafronte at (718) 743-6100, ext. 61.
Based on the outcome of the exam, a limited number of students will be invited back for an interview and a portfolio review during the following week. PLEASE DO NOT BRING A PORTFOLIO TO THE MARCH TEST.
The recipient of the art scholarship will be expected to enroll in the Sequential Art Program which begins in sophomore year in order to retain his/her scholarship.
Music Scholarships
For the Music Scholarships please contact the school no later than February 26, 2008.
There will be an audition and interview given on Saturday, March 1, 2008, from 10 AM – 3 PM. You must call Mr. John Malazzo at (718) 743-6100, ext. 62 to arrange an appointment for your audition/interview. The entire process takes approximately 15 minutes. At the audition, you will be expected to perform the following:
Instrumentalist -
- Any scales you know
- One piece of a slow lyrical style
- One piece of a fast technical style
- Be able to tap a beat (rhythm) as played by the director
- Sightread a section of music given on the day of the audition
Vocalist -
- Sing the "Star Spangled Banner" from memory
- Sing two contrasting styles of music
- Be able to tap a beat (rhythm) as played by the director
- Match pitch and learn a few new phrases as given by the director.
The recipients of the music scholarship must be a member of two performing ensembles each year. For instrumentalists, the required ensembles would be the Concert Band and either the Chamber Ensemble, Pep Band, or Jazz Ensemble. For vocalists, it would be the Chorus and Liturgical Choir.
