Mathematics

Department Philosophy

We believe that every student can and most importantly, wants to learn.  We believe that our students inherently possess the tools they need to learn and succeed, and they will let us know what they require if we watch, listen, and participate in their lives.  We are acutely aware that each student is not only unique but also has the right to an education, and we as teachers have the obligation to provide it.

Department Mission and Goals

Our mission is to inspire and challenge all of our students to define their strengths and weaknesses, to dream of the future, and to identify and place the academic pieces in order along the way so they may reach their potential in the field of mathematics.  Our students are unique and as such, their individual progress is constantly evaluated in an ongoing effort to match their ability with our Advanced Placement, IB, Honors, Regents, and Basic level classes.

In each of our courses, problem solving will be the main focus in order for the students to develop stronger reasoning skills.  It is our goal to provide all of our students with the knowledge and confidence needed to graduate with a Regents diploma.

Students will apply the methods they learn in class to solve a variety of new problems. Students will demonstrate an understanding of and use correct mathematical notation and terminology. Students will develop an appreciation for practice in order to learn mathematics. Students will participate in class, explaining and demonstrating methods of solution for the benefit of one another, as well as reinforcing their own understanding.

Requirements

Students are required to earn three credits in Math, that is, take and pass a minimum of three full years of Math.  In general, the required courses integrate the topics of algebra, geometry and trigonometry to prepare students for the New York State Regents examinations in Math.  Each student must score a 65 or above on at least one of these state exams in order to qualify for a Regents diploma.

Additional Resources

Peer tutoring and faculty assistance are available to our students during their four years.  In addition, Regents Review Classes are provided for students who need extra assistance when preparing to re-take the state examinations.

Faculty

The faculty is uniquely qualified to meet the multidimensional needs of its students in a constantly evolving world.  Cumulative teaching experience of over 40 years, and cumulative business related experience of 21 years is shared among the department members.

Student Evaluation and Placement

The ability of each student is assessed in an effort to match that student with the appropriate math class.  Incoming freshmen are evaluated on the basis of their scores on the TACHS exam and the in-house placement exam.  A student who passes the required Math Regents exam prior to entering high school may receive advanced-standing on the basis of his or her score.
