Math Question of the Month

Question of the Month - April 2011

Solve the following problem on a sheet of looseleaf paper, showing all of the work you did to arrive at your answer.  Be sure your name is on the paper and submit it to your math teacher.  The math class with the highest percentage of correct answers will receive a reward.  Check this page each month to see if your class is the winner and to see what the reward will be!

Please note: Your answer to this question may be submitted to your math teacher no later than April 20th, 2011.

So far this year, Adam has played 30 games of chess and has won only 6 of them.  What is the minimum number of additional games he must play, given that he is sure to lose at least one-third of them, so that for the year he will have won more games than he lost?

Question of the Month - December 2010

Congratulations to Mrs. Richard's Algebra 2/Trig class (A Day Period 6) for having the highest percentage of participation in the December Question of the Month contest.  The class has won a dress-down day on Friday, March 18th.

Answer to December's Question of the Month:

Elf C

Shown above are 4 elves buried up to their necks in presents.

The Grinch has cast a spell on them so that they can not move.  They can only look forward.

Between Elf A and Elf B is a brick wall through which they can not see.

They know that between them are 4 hats, 2 of which are white and 2 of which are red, but they do not know which color they are wearing.

In order to break the Grinch's spell, the elves can only use their powers of logic.  One of them must call out the color of his hat.  If he gets it wrong, the presents will disappear and none of the children around the world will receive their presents on Christmas morning.

The elves are not allowed to speak to each other and they have 10 minutes to figure it out and save Christmas.

After 1 minute:

Which of the elves calls out?

Why is he 100% certain of the color of his hat?

This is not a trick question.

There are no outside influences or magical spells, nor any other way of communicating.  The elves can not move and are buried in a straight line.  So Elf A & Elf B can only see their respective sides of the wall.  Elf C can see Elf B.  Elf D can see Elf B and Elf C.

Question of the Month - November 2010

Congratulations to Mr. Wiatre's Geometry class (A Day Period 1) for having the highest percentage of participation in the November Question of the Month contest.  The class has won a dress-down day on Friday, January 7th.

Answer to November's Question of the Month:

Mr. Raphael diced 72 apples.

Mr. Wiatre diced 91 apples.

Mr. Raphael starts to dice a basket of 163 apples for the StreetCorner Gourmet’s Stuffing from Heaven at the rate of four apples per minute.  Five minutes later, Mr. Wiatre joins him and dices apples at a rate of seven per minute.  When they are finished dicing the entire basket, how many apples has each diced?

Five employees, Ms. M, Ms. Richards, Deacon Andy, Mr. Wright and Ms. Geraci attended their company's Halloween party dressed as a Vampire, Witch, Grapes, Spider and a Pirate. The contestants dressed up and were given 2 awards. One award was for a best in a particular category, colorful, scariest, silliest, original and cutest. The other award was in terms of rank, 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th.  Determine who wore what costume and what 2 awards they received.

The winner of the most colorful costume was ranked above Ms. M's costume (which wasn't the witch).

The winner of the silliest category (which wasn't the vampire) was not worn by Deacon Andy.

The grapes costume was ranked above Ms. M's costume (which wasn't the silliest costume winner).

The vampire costume ranked above the scariest costume and below Ms. Richards' costume.

The pirate costume placed higher than the winner of the silliest costume and lower than Ms. Geraci's costume.

The spider costume ranked above Mr. Wright's (which wasn't the witch) and below the most original costume.
