Social Studies

All students are required to take history for four years as mandated by the New York State Board of Education.

Freshmen begin to prepare for a Global Regents that will be taken at the end of the sophomore year. They begin with ancient civilizations and conclude with the French Revolution in June. All freshmen must take a departmental final exam.

Sophomores continue preparing for the Regents. The students review the French Revolution and continue up to the modern day era.  All students must pass the Global Regents to earn a high school diploma.

Juniors take a one year course in United States History that begins with colonialism and ends with the present day. Different political, economic, and social/cultural themes will be explored. Students must pass the Regents in June to earn a high school diploma.

Seniors are required to take a one semester course in United States Government and one semester of Economics. The students do not have to take a Regents Exam, but they must pass a final exam at the completion of each course.

In addition to the above courses, we offer Advanced Placement classes in European History, United States History, and United States Government and Politics. Students must meet academic criteria for inclusion in these courses. For information regarding our IB course offerings, please see the IB Page.

History elective courses are also available to Juniors and Seniors. Courses include Street Law, Anthropology, History through Music and Film, and the History of New York City.
