World Languages

The Foreign Language Department of St. Edmund Preparatory High School provides the students with the skills necessary for communication in the target language. The communicative skills: speaking, understanding, reading and writing are developed by using a variety of tools in order to achieve proficiency in the foreign language as a means of communication. Students are also exposed to the culture of other countries through local and international trips and the use of the Internet.

St. Edmund Preparatory High School offers Italian, Spanish and Chinese. Students are required to take 3 consecutive years of the modern language they choose. At the end of the third year they are required to take the New York State Regents Examination.

In addition to the school and state requirements, students who achieve an average of 85 or above in their study of the foreign language are eligible to take a college level course. St. John's University will grant 6 credits to those students who achieve a grade of C or better. Italian and Spanish are also offered as Advanced Placement courses. (AP)

If incoming freshmen have studied a foreign language in junior high school and they wish to continue studying the same language, they may take the St. Edmund foreign language placement test. A student who scores 85 or above will be placed in an honors level class. This test is given in the spring before the student enters 9 th grade.
