Teens Teach Reading

Teens Teach Reading at St. Francis Xavier Elementary SchoolTeens Teach Reading is a program open to seniors who are willing to volunteer their time to work with students on the elementary level.  The teens work with students who are struggling in reading, help students prepare for the ELA exam in the fourth grade, and/or encourage students to read and write.  Last year the teens became pen-pals with a fourth grade class in Park Slope.  They shared books throughout the year and the fourth graders started a book club.  The teens created projects for the holidays and sent them to Park Slope where the students completed them in school. Both the teens and the fourth graders found it difficult when the year came to an end.

The teens also go to St. Edmund Elementary School and do read aloud sessions with kindergarteners, first and second graders.  The teens choose appropriate books to take with them when they visit Little Edmunds.

This program is a year-long commitment and must be taken seriously.  The high school students are taught the basic reading approaches and strategies so that they can successfully help the youngsters. The teens are responsible for creating projects and submitting ideas. The teens who have been involved in the program all agree that it is a very rewarding experience.
