Athletics - Winter Sports Update Posted Mar. 4, 2010
The winter sports season is now officially over for 2009-2010. I wanted to take a minute to recognize some of the wonderful accomplishments of the teams and individuals. I also wanted to thank all the student-athletes for representing themselves, their families, and St. Edmund Prep in such a wonderful manner.

Hockey: The Hockey team returned to the playoffs this year and finished the regular season in 2nd place with a record of (10-6). Guided by the senior leadership of Joe Calabrese, Ryan Rayder, Sal Annunziata, and Tim Horgan the Eagles made it to the semi-finals where we were eliminated by St. Francis Prep 2 games to 0. The majority of the roster will be returning next season as the Eagles try and get back to the finals.

Girls' Varsity Basketball: The Girls' finished in 5th place with a league record of (5-7). The highlight of the season was a thrilling senior day victory against Stella Maris.

Girls' JV Basketball: The Girls tied for 1st place in the regular season with Fontbonne Hall with a record of (9-1) then defeated Fontbonne in a tie-breaker game for the #1 seed. The 2 schools met again the Division 2 Championship game this time with Fontbonne winning. It was the first time our Girls' JV team had ever won a regular season division title and advance that far in the playoffs.

Boys' Varsity Basketball: The Boys' finished the regular season in 3rd place in the league with a record of (8-6). During the season, the team defeated rivals St. John's Prep (twice), Xavier, Nazareth, and McClancy. Senior Vinny Marchiano became the 4th male to surpass 1,000 points in his career and was selected to the ALL CHSAA SOUTH DIVISION team for the 2nd year in a row.

Boys' JV Basketball: The JV team finished the regular season in 2nd place with a record of (12-2) before losing to Cardinal Hayes in the playoffs. Highlights of the season included sweeping division rivals Nazareth, Xavier, and McClancy.

Boys' Freshman Basketball: The Freshman team showed a lot of heart this year finishing in 4th place with a record of (5-7) and qualifying for the playoffs.

The spring sports teams will be conducting meeting and tryouts beginning on Saturday, March 6th. Please check the white board, homeroom announcements, and the website for more details.

Let's Go Eagles,

Girls JV Basketball - JV Girls Basketball Take Regular Season Posted Mar. 4, 2010
The Girls' JV basketball team under the direction of Mr. Frank Kelly finished in 1st place in Division 2 during the regular season. Highlights included sweeping division rivals St. John's Prep and St. Saviour. The girls led by sophomores Janelle Garvey, Christina Servello, Jillian Dowd and freshman Veronica Cupo and Alexandra Samosiuk defeated St. Joseph in the semifinals.

In the division championship game, played at St. John's Prep on Monday March 1st, St. Edmund Prep rallied from a double figure deficit to take a lead late in the 4th quarter against Fontbonne but couldn't hang on.

Overall, the girls had a tremendous season and the future of girls’ basketball looks bright at St. Edmund Prep.

On Monday, February 8th against St. Agnes Senior Vinny Marchiano became the 4th male in the history of the school to surpass 1,000 career points. Coming in to the day needing 5 points to reach 1,000, Marchiano converted a 3-pointer at the halftime buzzer to reach the mark. Marchiano a 3-year member of the varsity team was featured for his accomplishments in the N.Y. He was honored at halftime with a basketball signed by all his teammates and coaches in the program and his name will be added to the banner in the gymnasium. Congratulations Vinny!
