This week, we officially bid a fond farewell to our principal, our teacher, and our friend John Lorenzetti, who retires after a 48 year career in Catholic Education, the last 22 of which have been as principal of St. Edmund Prep. Members of our SEP Family wanted to share their thoughts on Mr. Lorenzettiʼs service to SEP and wish him well on his retirement. Mr. Lorenzetti, all of us a St. Edmund Prep are most grateful for all that you have done, for your inspiration, guidance, leadership, and friendship. We wish you all the best and an abundance of Godʼs blessings in the days and years ahead as you enter this new part of your lifeʼs adventure. Thank you and congratulations!

Mrs. Kathy Carr - "St. Edmund has always been a really nice place to work, but when John Lorenzetti came here it became a great place to work."

Mr. Christopher Wright - "When I think back to what things were like before John became principal, it's amazing how much better the school has become and how much change has taken place. I have a vivid memory of our first faculty meeting in September, the day or two after Labor Day and the first thing that John Lorenzetti said to the faculty was that his goal was to make St. Edmund one of the US News and World report's outstanding schools. I thought myself we hired a crazy man and that there was no way that was going to happen."

Carr - "What John did for St. Edmund was he made all the faculty want to be better. Up until that point we're all doing our jobs.  Then John came along and he challenged us. He wanted us all to rise up and make St. Edmund a better place to be."

Wright - "...but as I got to know John better and work with him very closely and it became apparent that John's vision was real and then he willing to do whatever it took an amazing work ethic to make that Vision come true and slowly but surely the school started to change.."

Mr. Brian Wager - "This place has evolved into something that I never thought it was going to be in 1999 but what John did is he put his imprint on the school and he allowed us to teach in the manner in which we were going to be the most successful... I don't think a lot of principal's give you that sort of freedom, that sort of trust, and I think it's in that freedom and in that trust as a teacher you have the ability to impart so much more than just what's in a book..."

Carr - "Over the years, students have changed over time. Look at the IB Program that we have now. St. Edmund's has definitely turned around on the John Lorenzetti's leadership and it's a place where students want to come to school now."

Fr. David Dettmer - "I think that John is directly responsible for how St. Edmund  has grown in the past years to be really a great place. The atmosphere in the building is, I think,tremendous. It's grown and continues to grow to be one of the premier high schools in Brooklyn, and I think that's directly attributable to him and in the way that he sees things. "

Mr. Kevin Raphael - "When I think of the first day that I joined St. Edmund Prep, I was really taken with the whole idea of how clearly compassionate and caring John Lorenzetti was...

Mrs. Kathy Vulpis - "I think John has done a great job as a principal and more so as a person. I find him a very compassionate person. I think he led by example...as he  really, truly cared for people and loves people and treated them well. I think that  really touched me special way."

Mrs. Allison McGinnis - "When I think of John Lorenzetti, immediately I think of loyalty. His loyalty to his friends, his family, his school, is really nothing I've ever experienced before. It's just who he is. When I first came to St. Edmund, I had been teaching at another school for a few years... I found out that the principal from the other school called over to John complaining that I had broken contract and that he had taken me under contract. It didn't matter to John.  At that moment, when he hired me, I was part of his family, I was part of this family and I wasn't going anywhere. He pretty much told the other principal, sorry...sorry that that happened but she belongs to us now. That loyalty, that little moments in time right there is indicative of the bigger loyalty that he has to the vision of this building, his own life, his friends, his family... it is one of the most powerful incredible things that I've ever had the opportunity to witness and to be a part of. "

Mr. Ken MacBride - "So, I've had the fortune of knowing John Lorenzetti since I'm 14 years old at Nazareth High School... turned out that he became the moderator of student council and encouraged me to go ahead and get involved in that.  I'm so thankful for it because John introduced me to a world that I had never been involved with. Had it not been for John pushing me in that direction I would not have met my wife, my best friend, Ann. To use the words of John Lorenzetti, "I am forever in his debt."

Mrs. Ann MacBride - "After so many years later, we come back to St. Edmund for an  orientation for a daughters and we walk in the doors and we saw Mr. Lorenzetti and we kind of felt like this is home, this is where they belong.  Very happy with the decision to put all four daughters here and couldn't never look back. Mr. Lorenzetti was a great part of their developing... who they are today."

Dettmer - "He's left a tremendous legacy. I'm sure he won't totally be absent from the future of St. Edmund Prep.  He has left the school in a very, very good position. I know that the board is very appreciative of everything that he's done and very grateful for his vision and what he's done to make St. Edmund Prep what it is today."
