Michael Maffia '18 looks at his experiences on the baseball team, in the band, and on the Emmaus Retreat Team as pivotal moments in his high school career.

Curveballs and sour notes are nothing strange to this four-year member of the baseball team and the bands. Yet as we all know, life sometimes throws different kinds of curve balls. This young man is no stranger to those either. Yet despite facing some recent life-changing obstacles including to have major surgery on his writing and pitching arm, he always manages to produce a smile and a positive attitude, thankful everyday for the gifts God has given him. He sets goals for himself and works hard to meet them. This is evident by the fact that he achieved Eagle Scout May 11th. He continues to be an inspiration for me and for many others who know him. Attending SUNY Purchase in September, it is my privilege to present Senior, Michael Mafia

Good evening Mrs. McGinnis, Ms. McEvoy, Mr. Raphael, faculty, fellow students, and honored guests. So I'm going to talk to you about my experience here at The Prep over the last four years, and these years were the best years of my life, hands down. I made new friends, I build new relationships and I strengthened old ones with friends and, most importantly, I matured. So throughout my years I was a part of a few different things including baseball, JV basketball, as a band member for four years, an Emmaus Retreat team leader. I can definitely say that these activities I was a part of have helped me in their own distinct way. Baseball has taught me discipline. Basketball has taught me to work as hard as I possibly could, all the time. Band has taught me dedication by being in school every morning at 7:30, and being an Emmaus Retreat team leader has helped me mature by taking on a leadership role. So throughout these activities I've also made many close relationships with teachers including Mr. Wagner, Mr. Romano, Mr. G,  Br. Mark, Mr. Kirk and Nurse. So, next I would like to talk about more about my experience on JV Basketball so Mr. Wagner and Mr. Romano with the best coaches I could have ever asked for it when it came to basketball. They are very understanding and supportive of every player on the team. The practices were crazy though; We ran so many suicides I actually ended up losing weight by the end of the season. But, in the end it was definitely worth it. I'm really glad I didn't skip out on the opportunity on trying out for the team like I did freshman year. But, after sophomore year I decided not to try out for basketball and dedicate my time to baseball. So my JV coach was Mike Carney and my varsity coach is Mr. Romano. These past two years being on Varsity has been the greatest baseball experience my life. Being part of a team here The Prep was the best experience I could have gone through throughout High School. I got to make new friendships and strengthen old ones while doing something I love. So, junior year wasn't the best season for us. We only won three games but still enjoyed my time on the field with my friends. This season has been great so far we went 9 and 3 and we won the division champs so, that's pretty cool. This past week has been a crazy and unforgettable week on the field. So, we lost our first game of the playoffs against Monsignor Scanlan which meant we are now in the losers bracket so we had to take the hard way to get to the 'chip and so we had to win five straight games to become City Champs. So far we're 4 for 4 and the City Championship is this Saturday, St. John's at 4 p.m. against Monsignor Scanlan. You guys should all come. It's going to be a big game and hopefully we can pull off the win and become City Champions and I can finish my high school baseball career on that note. So, I'm sad to say that it's coming to an end soon and as Mr. Romano always says cherish these days because before you know it, it's going to be over and you always have to remember those forever moments. So, he says that regarding baseball but now that I think about it, those words can also be said about school. I can't believe senior year is over and more importantly my high school career is over. I couldn't have gone through these past four years without the faculty at St. Edmund Prep. There are few teachers that I've developed a close bond with. I would like to start off by saying thank you to Mr. Kirk, Br. Mark and Nurse. You guys truly made my experience here unforgettable. You've done so much for me and I greatly appreciated it. You three are always there for me, no matter what time of day it was. So here at St. Edmund we're all family and you guys truly made it feel that way. Mr. Kirk,  you definitely are the teacher that I grew closest to throughout these four years. I remember the first day of class. You had no idea who I was and then you heard my last name and asked if I was related to Doug Maffia. I told you that he was my brother and then the next words out of your mouth where "Are you a bobo head like he is?" Since that day you haven't stopped teasing me in the halls, in the classroom, but I really cherish our friendship we developed. So, it's bittersweet to say that today was my last final. I'm not going to miss the midterms, the tests and all the finals, but I'll definitely miss walking into Edmunds next year. I cannot thank everyone enough for making my high school career this amazing. Good luck next year to everyone. You guys are truly the best classmates I could have ever asked for. Thank you.
