2024 Senior Spotlights
2024 Senior Spotlights
On May 1st, College Acceptance Day, members of the Class of 2024 were invited to share a bit of their story that has led them to graduation day in our Senior Spotlight.
I am very proud of being named as the Valedictorian of the Class of 2024. This is something that I did not even believe was a possibility for me when I was entering into high school. Being named the Valedictorian is not just a title, but a representation of my hard work and dedication to my studies over these past four years. This would not have been possible without the teachers at SEP who have invested so much time and effort into my education and overall development as a person." Giovanni Blaise attending the University of Connecticut, majoring in Computer Engineering.
"Being full IB has helped prepare me for college the most. The classes that I took were structured to resemble college classes and they were just as challenging. The teachers who taught these classes have also helped prepare me for college through their different teaching methods. As a full IB student I had a great deal of coursework and having to balance it all with extracurriculars has taught me responsibility and how to keep myself on task. Jenna Lemmon attending the University of Florida, majoring in Architecture.
"St. Edmund Prep has prepared me for the years ahead through helping me adapt to different styles of teaching which might not best fit my style of learning. The variety of learning environments have helped me to be a better student." Miles Hooper attending St. John's University majoring in Physics
"I am grateful to my teachers who helped me to realize my own potential and who pushed me to achieve beyond what I thought was possible." Erin Tasso attending LIU Brooklyn to pursue a degree in Nursing
"I think that my College Accounting class with Father Mark prepared me for college. The way we learned, the way we engaged with each other, and the way he challenged us helped me prepare for and know what to look for in college." - Brianne Rossi attending Brooklyn College majoring in Psychology Brooklyn College
"All the SEP moments collectively, has prepared me for college because it taught me a great work ethic which prepared for success. I'm most proud of making connections with the teachers, feeling a sense of family, and making life long friends." - Angelo Cappucci attending Brooklyn College majoring in Information Technology Brooklyn College
"A great memory of my time here at St. Edmund is Throwing a no-hitter freshman year. It was a great moment for me and my teammates, one that will stay with me for a long time." - Jake Hansen studying Construction Management at SUNY Delhi
"I am proud of the way my character has developed during my time at St. Edmund Prep and the way my learning experiences have caused me to look at things differently. I am thankful to my teachers who have adapted to help me learn and retain knowledge. " Michael Hamlin studying Mechatronics at SUNY Delhi
"The community service opportunities at SEP were unique experiences that prepared me for college. During these experiences, I've worked with many different people, which helped to prepare me for college as I will meet and work with many new people in college. " - Gabrielle Sarocco attending Seton Hall University majoring in Psychology
"SEP has prepared me for college as it gave me the ability to take college courses and treat me as a college student academically but kept the comfort and care at the high school level. SEP challenged me with the task of balancing my classes, involvement in school, and sports. Specifically though, IB English, for both years, taught me the art of writing. Whether it was practice Paper 1 tests and constant Paper 2 Essay Assignments, both Mrs. K. and Mrs. McGrath taught me how to practice word choice and how my interpretation of the text can lead to a new understanding of the text that I, at first, was unable to see. " Lucy McGrath studying Marketing at Fordham University
"What I am most proud of are the accomplishments and achievements I've made at St. Edmund Prep and I am also proud of the relationships I have made because I never thought I would get to know so many great people in high school. Events like Street Corner Gourmet taught me to work with others and meet new people, which is something I have to do in college. " Elijah Vassell attending Hofstra University majoring in Pre-Medical Studies
"My time at SEP has taught me a variety of lessons including finding who I am and the person I want to be in college. From participating in services like Street Corner Gourmet to participating in many clubs like art, baking and robotics really helped me find my interests. Taking IB courses taught me to challenge myself and expand my knowledge even though the program was difficult. I’m grateful to have experienced wonderful memories with my teachers and friends at SEP." Claire Almodiel majoring in Biology at Hofstra University.
"Becoming an athletic intern in senior year gave me a better understanding of the "behind the scenes" work that goes into hosting a sports game. I really enjoyed learning how to keep track of sports statistics as they happen in the official scorebook. This has definitely prepared me for college where I will be studying sports statistics." Aiden Sollecito attending Iona University majoring in Sports Statistics and Analytics
"Ms. Hanley has been terrific in preparing me for college writing. Having her as a teacher has really helped me to to better express myself as a writer. Thanks Ms. Hanley!" Samuel Maresca attending Kent State University majoring in Construction Management.
"The atmosphere at St. Edmund prep helped me to move beyond what I thought I could do and to try new things. Thanks to everyone who helped me over the past four years." Jenna Kahlau studying Psychology at Brooklyn College.
"A teacher that has uniquely prepared me for college since day one is Mr. Musarella-Conti. I had Mr. M three out of my four years at SEP. The second I walked into his Freshman Biology class, I instantly knew that he was going to be my favorite teacher for the next four years. He most definitely sparked my love for Biology because I simply looked forward to his class everyday. He also partially influenced my decision to pursue the IB Diploma because he was constantly encouraging me to take IB Biology which was one of the things that was making me weary about full IB because everyone was talking about how hard IB Bio is. However, Mr. M immediately told me that I was so capable of taking IB Bio. Since then, Mr. M has proven that he is an extremely intelligent teacher who uses that to inspire the IB Bio kids into not only doing well in the class but also making them choose to do a Biology or medical major in college. He is one of those teachers that you feel so comfortable asking questions in class and can always go to for help if you are struggling a little on a topic. He so clearly wants nothing but the best for his students and I will forever be grateful for the influence he has had on my life." Isabella Pacelli attending Wagner College as a Physician Assistant major
"Mr. Romano has really prepared me for college. In my time on the baseball team and in his HOTA class during my junior year, he always expressed that you have to be confident in yourself and maintain a strong mindset in anything you do. " Kevin Kocher attending the University of Scranton majoring in Business Analytics
"Ms. Johnson has been a very big part of my journey to college, Throughout all four years at the Prep she has been my IB SEHS, Health, Advanced PE, and PE teacher, she has always been there for me whenever I needed her whether it was inside of the classroom or outside of the classroom I always knew she was by my side. She pushes all students to their maximum and always wants the best for everyone and is someone you can go to when you need anything. She helped me strive to be the best student I can be and is a big part of why I am attending WVU. " Luke Merrick attending West Virginia University majoring in Physical Education and Kinesiology
"As a whole, SEP itself has helped me overcome personal challenges while achieving academic excellence. SEP also helped me to be resilient and share my strengths and weaknesses. My journey at SEP has reinforced the importance of perseverance and determination. Thank you, St. Edmund Prep!" Matthew Brijbukhan attending the University at Albany, SUNY majoring in Business Administration.
"During my SEP experience I am the most proud having the privilege of being an Emmaus retreat leader as well as my ability to overcome many challenges throughout my high school career. Being an Emmaus retreat leader was the highlight of my high school career and I could not thank you enough my amazing Emmaus 79 sisters and fellow Emmaus team members for being a part of an experience that I will never forget. As an Emmaus retreat leader I was able to step out of my comfort zone, build lifelong friendships, as well as with as well as grow my faith with God. I am also very proud of my resilience as I tore both my ACLs throughout my high school career. It was very challenging to say the least and I am so beyond grateful for all my teachers, friends, coaches, and family who helped me get through this tough time. " Sophia Russell attending Indiana University majoring in Nursing.
"Coming to St. Edmund after moving helped me learn how to work in a new environment. Adapting to the new environment of college doesn't seen so scary because of the support I received here." Michael Donovan attending Farmingdale State College
"Being a student athlete at SEP has prepared me for college. It has taught me how to be able to manage my time, while being able to balance my sports and my school work. I'm proud that I have been able to maintain honors while playing sports." Cadence Coffey attending East Carolina University majoring in Nursing
"I believe that taking both AP and IB classes has prepared me for college because it has taught me analysis skills, time management and given me a great appreciation for all the teachers that spend so much time on making sure that we are well prepared for all that lies ahead academically and in the world outside of St. Edmund Prep. " Avangeline Greco majoring in Finance at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville
"St. Edmund Prep has encouraged me to push and challenge myself. Having Mr. Wagner as my IB Physics teacher was a blessing. He taught me how apply my knowledge and understand concepts rather than memorize them for the next test. Without this community I would’ve never been able to achieve my goals or find my second family." - Margaret McComiskey studying Nursing at Iona University
"One thing that helped me prepare for college was definitely the Emmaus Retreat and being a team leader. I was able to develop a good leadership mentality being a Emmaus team leader. It also showed me how to open up to people and develop a listening skill that I really didn't have before hearing everyone open up to me as well. It also showed me how to trust people as well and was just a great time my favorite thing at SEP. By far the best thing the school has to offer in my opinion and is one thing that I will never forget about St Edmund Prep." Anthony LaPenna majoring in Marine Transportation at SUNY Maritime College

"The overall SEP experience really set me on a course for success in the future. The supportive faculty, the great friends, and the experiences which challenged me and pushed me made a huge impact on my life." Christopher Larson attending SUNY Delhi majoring in Plumbing and Electrical Instrumentation
"Being a part of the athletics program has influenced my school and social life in so many ways. Being a player and part of the athletic department has brought me closer to many different people, students and teachers, as well as improve myself in the classroom and on the court. I have these people to thank for making myself the student and more importantly, the person I am today." Gavin Paulsen attending Coastal Carolina University majoring in Engineering Science
"Mrs. McGrath's IB English class has prepared me for the next chapter up ahead due to the oral presentations done during class. This made me more comfortable with public speaking and putting myself out there. There are many great teachers and faculty at the school to thank for my academic achievement and please to have made special connections over the years." Joel Cruz majoring in Accounting at Seton Hall University
"The experience that prepared me for college the most was practicing public speaking during presentations during my IB English class. This role challenged me to develop crucial skills that will serve me well in the college setting. I had to learn how to clearly articulate complex concepts to audiences with varying levels of prior knowledge. This ability to communicate complex ideas in an accessible manner will be invaluable as I navigate college lectures, presentations, and discussions. Additionally, this experience taught me how to think on my feet. This flexibility and responsiveness will help me thrive in the dynamic, fast-paced environment of a college classroom. I am confident that the lessons I've learned in this class will serve me well as I take on new challenges and opportunities in the years to come." Emmabelle Lafosse majoring in Biology at the University at Albany, SUNY

Over the past two years of being in the program, I have been given the opportunity to challenge myself in my classes, and develop study habits that I know will help me succeed during college. " Kristin McDonough majoring in Early Childhood Education at Hofstra University
"I am most proud of my athletic achievements while being able to be an honor roll student. Being student-athlete really challenged me to set goals, balance priorities, and be the best version of myself that I could be. Thanks to my coaches and teammates for being an important part of my four years at the Prep." Evan Hernandez majoring in Business Administration and Management at Borough of Manhattan Community College/CUNY
"One experience in SEP that has prepared me for college is the Emmaus Retreat. It taught me that even though life is chaotic everyday that we have to take a step back and give time to God. Even though it doesn't have to be full two day retreats take five minutes to step away from life and talk to God." Michael Lauriat majoring in Sports Broadcasting and Media Studies at Iona University

St. Edmund Prep helped me by making me responsible for myself, giving me freedom, but also making sure I do my homework, study, check my email, without help from others. This made me more responsible for myself." Jack Mulholland majoring in Civil Engineering at Manhattan College

I have formed friendships and rekindled bonds that I thought would be broken forever. St. Edmund's has allowed me to strengthen my faith and become more confident as an individual. After taking on the IB Diploma Program, I truthfully feel well prepared for college level coursework, and have learned how to better manage my time and balance school life with personal life. As an SEP Student, I've developed countless relationships with friends who always have my back, but also with teachers who were always there to support and encourage me when I needed it the most. As a president of both SEP Ambassadors and Student Council, I've grown as a leader, too, interacting with both prospective students and current students alike, giving me the skills to be involved outside of a school setting. As an ESL student, I feel particularly welcomed in this community. Special thanks to Ms. Ciaffone, whose communication group brought together all ESL students. This experience not only significantly improved my English proficiency but also laid a solid foundation for my future studies. The friendships and connections I have made over these past three years will truly benefit me for life. Last but not least, I want to thank my family for their love and support. These memories will forever flow over me like an endless, intimate conversation on a warm summer afternoon, a confluence of connection with this world, without which I would by no means become who I am today." Yufei Chen majoring in Psychology at Stony Brook University

All who coordinate the Emmaus Retreat do an outstanding job every year and this year I was honored to work alongside them as retreat leader. My own Emmaus experience was incredible and extremely eye-opening. I was thrilled and grateful to gift that experience to this year's retreatants as their leader. The Emmaus Retreat is truly one of my fondest memories from the past four years and getting the opportunity to experience it in its entirety is my proudest achievement. " Diana Wilen attending Indiana University majoring in Business Management
"Ms. Johnson and Ms. Hanley have both helped me with time management, showing me how important that really is. While in college I will need to get all my work in on time and really understand everything that I'm learning. I am most proud of stepping out of my comfort zone and playing Ice Hockey. I never would have thought id be playing Ice Hockey, but thanks to Coach Leahy I got that chance and I certainly proud of myself for doing that."
