James Karr reflects on the anxiety he felt as he walked into the doors on Ocean Avenue for the first time as a freshman and how St. Edmund Prep has helped him to find his passion and place in our school community.

Throughout his freshman and sophomore years, James Karr was a fairly introverted student, but his effort and creativity did not go unnoticed. When NYC went remote in 2020 and our classes were muted, James Karr seemed to find his voice. Art students communicated through the artwork they would hold up to the screen. It became apparent that this particular student was spending a great deal of time perfecting his creations.  Over the last 2 years, James somehow managed to pack his schedule with as many art classes as possible, and even took a college design course in the summer. By his senior year, James Karr became the resident expert in all things media design; he is a true classroom leader, sharing his expertise with freshmen classes as well as his junior & senior classmates. As his ever-so-recognizable hair grew taller, so did his courage, determination and creativity. James has amassed an impressive portfolio of illustrations and animations containing unique and quirky characters all his own. Attending the prestigious School of Visual Arts in the fall (on scholarship), it is with great admiration and respect that I present, James Karr.

I am certain that like most people, the transition from middle school to high school was one filled with confusion, fear and anxiety. I was uncertain if I would like my teachers or even make any friends.  Thankfully, I was lucky that St. Edmund was my High school of choice as they made it their mission to make that transition as smooth as possible. And what a great school it was. In spite of Covid, I made many wonderful friends and memories. I will always look back fondly of listening to Mr. Scanlon’s stories in economics class or making those stop motion films with Mrs. Barbieri in New Media Design. One of the proudest moments I’ve experienced at this school was getting the opportunity to design the Walkathon Shirt. Let me reiterate, they were letting me, a student, have the chance to design the shirts for the Walkathon, one of St. Edmund most cherished events. I believe this proves more than anything how much this school cares about each and every one of its students. Now cut to my senior year, and a new chapter in my life is fast approaching. These next four years of College are going to be the most important years of my life. Thankfully, St. Edmund has done a great job in training me for this next step, and I couldn’t be more grateful.
